Each piece is a life size bonnet (approximately 7"x 7" x 7") is made from folded paper and an assembly of small hand colored dry point etchings.
Past Work
In this series I explored my interest in the history of women’s craft and clothing. Specifically, I was drawing and sculpting specially structured elements of dress worn by women and employing these forms as representations of the figure.
The bonnet, or head covering, serves as a kind of helmet. The wearer becomes more uniform with those around them which offers a sense of protection, anonymity and privacy. I imagine the inside of the head piece as a private and intimate space where, under the shroud of conformity, the wearer is free to think.
This delicate paper bonnet encourages the viewer to approach the intimate, chapel-like space molded by the form of the head, or mind that once occupied it.
